Short answer
  • One system holds one island. Nintendo says that's true even if you buy more than one copy of the game.
  • Two kids can share that island. Nintendo says up to eight players can live on one island.
  • The first player is in charge for good. Nintendo calls them the Resident Representative and says the role can't be moved to anyone else.
  • For a second island, you need a second system and a second copy of the game. A Switch Lite is the smallest way to add one.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out in 2020, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arrived on January 15, 2026. It's still the game a lot of kids ask for first.

In homes with more than one kid, the next question comes fast: can each of them have their own island? On one console, the answer is no.

Can one Switch have two islands?

No. Nintendo's support page is direct about it: "You can only create one island per Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system, even if you use multiple games."

Buying a second copy doesn't change this. Separate user profiles don't either. Every profile on that console lands on the same island.

One console, one island. Even a second copy won't add another.
One console, one island. Even a second copy won't add another.

Can two kids share one island?

Yes. Nintendo says up to eight players can live on the same island. Each one gets a house, and each one can play on their own turn.

There's one catch that siblings tend to run into. The first person who starts the game becomes the Resident Representative.

Nintendo's support page gives an example of what only that player can do: "only the Resident Representative can receive and set up Blathers' museum tent." It also says the role can't be handed over later.

So if the younger kid starts the game, the older one can't take over those island decisions afterward, and the other way around. It's worth deciding who starts before anyone presses a button.

Can they play at the same time on one Switch?

Yes. Nintendo lists one to four players on one system. On the same console, everyone is on the same island.

Nintendo calls one player the Leader and the others Followers. Each player can use a single Joy-Con held sideways, a pair of Joy-Con, or a Pro Controller.

A Switch, an OLED model, or a Switch 2 comes with one set of Joy-Con. Split it, and that covers two players. A third or fourth player needs another controller.

What do you need for a second island?

Two things: another system and another copy of the game.

Nintendo's support page also says local wireless and online play need one system and one game per player. So if both kids want to visit each other's islands at the same time, each one needs their own setup anyway.

A Switch Lite is the smallest system that runs it. Nintendo lists handheld mode as supported for the game. Nintendo's comparison page says the Lite doesn't come with Joy-Con, since its controls are built in.

Which copy of the game should you get for the second system?

For a Switch Lite, the regular Nintendo Switch version is the one to look for.

You may also see the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in search results. Nintendo's support page says a Switch 2 Edition game card can still go into a Switch and play as the original Switch game. The Switch 2 features won't be there, so on a Lite the regular version is enough.

Getting a Switch 2 anyway? The old Switch can keep an island

If a Switch 2 is already on the gift list, that's your second system. The old Switch keeps its island, and the Switch 2 can start a new one.

You can also go the other way. Nintendo's support page says you can move your island to another Switch 2 or Switch, and after a full move, nothing from the game stays on the old system. The old Switch is then free for a new island and a new Resident Representative.

Either way, each system needs its own copy of the game if both kids want to play at the same time.

How much space does it take?

Nintendo lists 10.6GB on Switch and 10.8GB on Switch 2 for the download.

Who can skip this

If your kids don't mind sharing one island, you don't need anything new. Up to eight people can live there, and each gets their own house.

If only two kids play at the same time on a Switch, an OLED model, or a Switch 2, the Joy-Con that came with it are enough.
