Rayman Legends Retold on Switch 1? It's Switch 2 only, but the 2017 game still plays four

- Retold is a Switch 2 game. Nintendo's store lists Nintendo Switch 2 as the only system. It arrives December 3, 2026.
- An original Switch isn't shut out. Rayman Legends Definitive Edition plays up to four people on one console, and it's a 3 GB download.
- Retold adds a second game. Nintendo says the purchase includes Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition.
- Don't grab the 30th Anniversary Edition for siblings. Nintendo lists that one as single system (1). One player.

Rayman Legends Retold lands on December 3, 2026, and Ubisoft is selling it as a four-player couch game. That's a gift request waiting to happen.
Then comes the real question. Will it run on the Switch already sitting under your TV? If that console is an original Switch, no.
Does Rayman Legends Retold work on an original Switch?
No. Nintendo's store page lists one system, and that system is Nintendo Switch 2.
There's no original Switch version on the page, and no upgrade path either. Nintendo lists the download at 23.4 GB and the players as single system (1-4).
So an old Switch can't load it, whichever store you buy from.

What Rayman can your old Switch play?
Rayman Legends Definitive Edition. Nintendo's store page lists it for Nintendo Switch, with a release date of September 12, 2017.
It's the same four-player idea. Nintendo's description says "Join the team with up to 4 players in local co-op!" The page lists single system (1-4), local wireless (2), and online (1).
The download is 3 GB. That's easy to fit on a console with a crowded home screen.
One detail matters if a Switch 2 might arrive later. Nintendo marks this game "Supported" on Switch 2, and adds "Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch." Buying it now doesn't strand it.
Is Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition the same thing?
No, and this is the easy mistake to make. It's a Nintendo Switch release dated February 13, 2026, and it collects the classic Rayman.
Nintendo lists it as single system (1). One player, on one console. The page describes the classic adventure across 5 versions, plus extra levels and a documentary.
It's a nice gift for a parent who grew up with Rayman. It's the wrong box for two kids who want to play together.

What does Retold have that the 2017 game doesn't?
A second game, for one. Nintendo's page says "Includes: The base game + Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition."
Nintendo also calls Retold "a bold reimagining of the acclaimed platformer, filled with new content and narrative twists." The page says you can "Play the entire adventure in up to 4-player couch co-op."
The size gap is wide. Nintendo lists 23.4 GB for Retold against 3 GB for the 2017 game.
What should parents check before buying Retold?
The ESRB listing. Both games are rated E10+, so that part lines up.
The notes don't. The ESRB lists Retold with Crude Humor, Fantasy Violence, and Mild Language, plus Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. Nintendo's store page shows those same two interactive notes.
The 2017 game is listed with Cartoon Violence and Comic Mischief, and no interactive elements at all.
Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition, the game that comes with Retold, is rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence and Suggestive Themes. That's worth knowing, because it arrives with the purchase.
How many controllers do you need?
Both Rayman Legends versions list up to four players on one console. Four at once means four controllers.
Nintendo's listings don't say which controllers Rayman supports. I haven't found a Nintendo page that settles whether one Joy-Con each is enough, or whether every player needs a pair.
Here's what Nintendo does list. The Switch 2 bundle box holds one Joy-Con 2 (L) and one Joy-Con 2 (R). That's two controllers to start with.

If your family has an original Switch and the kids just want Rayman together, you don't need new hardware. The 2017 game covers four players on the console you already own.
If a Switch 2 is in the house and only two people play at once, you don't need extra controllers. Nintendo's bundle box ships with a Joy-Con 2 pair.
