Short answer
  • There are two versions, and they're separate buys. Nintendo's US store lists one for Nintendo Switch and one for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • The Switch 2 version won't play on an older Switch. Nintendo's support site says Switch 2 games can't be played on Switch, apart from Switch 2 Edition games.
  • The Switch version plays on both. Nintendo lists it as supported on Switch 2, with game behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch.
  • The boxed copy is a double pack. Nintendo Everything reports the box holds Retro Roundup and Toy Story 3 Complete Edition.

Toy Story: Retro Roundup came out October 15, 2026. It's a collection of the old Toy Story games, and it's an easy gift to get wrong.

Here's why. Nintendo's store lists a Nintendo Switch version and a Nintendo Switch 2 version, and the two boxes read almost the same.

Which version does your console need?

Nintendo SwitchYesYes6.4GB
Nintendo Switch 2NoYes7.1GB

Nintendo's page for the Switch version lists Switch 2 as supported. Its note says game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.

The Switch 2 page lists Nintendo Switch 2 as the system. Nintendo's support site says Switch 2 games can't be played on Switch, except for Switch 2 Edition games. This release isn't one of those.

So which one should you buy?

If your family only has an original Switch, an OLED model, or a Lite, buy the Nintendo Switch version.

If you have a Switch 2 and nothing else, either one runs. The Switch 2 version is the one built for that console.

If the kids play on a Switch 2 and on an older Switch, the Switch version is the flexible pick. One copy covers both.

What games are in it?

Nintendo's store page lists these:

Nintendo also says the collection holds 11 total versions of the games across console and handheld. Those are the old console and handheld editions of the same titles.

For parents checking content, Nintendo's page lists one descriptor for Retro Roundup: fantasy violence.

Can two kids play together?

Yes, on one console. Nintendo lists single system (1-2) for both versions.

Both versions list TV mode, tabletop mode, and handheld mode. So it plays on the TV or in the car.

What's in the boxed copy?

Two games. Nintendo Everything reports the boxed version holds both Retro Roundup and Toy Story 3 Complete Edition, and that the Switch 2 version has all content on the cartridge.

Toy Story 3 Complete Edition is a separate game, built on the 2010 film. Nintendo's page for it lists comic mischief and fantasy violence as descriptors.

Do you need a memory card?

Probably not for the boxed copy, since Nintendo Everything reports the Switch 2 cartridge holds all the content.

Downloading is the case to watch. Nintendo lists 6.4GB for the Switch version and 7.1GB for the Switch 2 version.

An original Switch has 32GB of internal storage, and part of that is reserved for the system. Nintendo says you can add a microSDHC or microSDXC card up to 2TB.

Who can skip this

If the kids want a game for three or four players at once, this isn't it. Nintendo lists one or two players on one console.

If you already own the Switch version and you've since added a Switch 2, you don't need to buy it again. Nintendo lists it as supported there.
